The Great Synagogue
Memorial Park

The park provides a tranquil space for contemplation and reflection.

Within walking distance of the synagogue and Jewish Museum, the Memorial Park stands as a serene tribute to the countless lives lost during the Holocaust.

Inaugurated on November 29, 2019, on the 80th anniversary of the burning and destruction of the Great Synagogue (1863-1939) by the Nazis, the park provides a tranquil space for contemplation and reflection.

The park features 40 gray sandstone slabs with countless irregular cuts, reflecting the interconnecting crcrossing paths of life and the thriving community of Jews in Oświęcim that was extinguished.

A narrow curbiss delicately marks the former synagogue’s outline, separating the park’s interior from the dense greenery surrounding it.

Throughout the park, visitors can find interactive exhibits and educational plaques detailing the history of the synagogue alongside benches depicting zodiac signs, mirroring the ornaments once found in the Great Synagogue. The park is a place of remembrance where history is brought to life amid a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers.

The Great Synagogue Memorial Park project has been recognized for its thoughtful design and meaningful impact, including a 2022 European Union Mies van der Rohe Award nomination.

A Peaceful space for residents and tourists to reflect on their lives and this horrific chapter in history.

Without educating the next generation,

how will we keep their memories alive?
